O Come, Emmanuel!
My favorite Christmas hymn is O Come, O Come Emmanuel. Most of the time, Christmas songs sound merry and joyful. This one has a tinge of sadness and longing. You may ask, “Why would you want to be such a downer, Pastor?” It’s not about the sadness but about the waiting.
The people of God waited for many years for the Messiah to come. There were many prophecies in the Old Testament that pointed to a Messiah that was to come. But then there was a time where God no longer sent messages to prophets, in fact, 400 years from the last words from God to the time where Jesus arrives on the scene.
We too are now in a waiting pattern. While we have already been visited by the Messiah on this side of history, we wait for Jesus to come again. The waiting has been going on for a while, but one day just like that day in Bethlehem some 2000 years ago, God’s people will be visited once more. But this time, the Lord will come to make all things right, forevermore.
And all God’s people say, O Come, O Come, Emmanuel!
In His Service,
Pastor Jared
